Let’s dive into why you should choose Plantation Shutters for your bedroom, theatre room, or nursery — no matter where comfort and darkness are a necessity.
Why choose Plantation Shutters?

Plantation Shutters are a popular window treatment option for several reasons, especially when it comes to light control and privacy!
Light controlThe adjustable louvres on Plantation Shutters allow you to easily control how much light enters a room. You can tilt them to allow natural light in while maintaining privacy or close them for a more shaded environment. |
CustomisationPlantation Shutters can be customised in size, colour, and material, allowing you to match them with your interior décor. |
PrivacyPlantation Shutters are excellent at providing privacy without sacrificing aesthetics. When closed, they block the view from outside, giving you complete control over who can see into your home. |
Easy to clean & low maintenanceUnlike fabric window coverings, Plantation Shutters require minimal maintenance. A simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is enough to keep them looking fresh. |
InsulationThe materials used in Plantation Shutters, particularly PVC and aluminium, provide insulation, helping to regulate the temperature inside your home by reducing heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. |
Energy efficiencyPlantation Shutters’ insulating properties make them energy efficient, potentially lowering your energy bills by keeping your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. |
Noise ReductionPlantation Shutters’ solid structure helps to slightly muffle outside noise, providing a quieter and more serene environment indoors. |
Increases the value of your homePlantation Shutters are considered a premium window treatment and can enhance your home’s overall value and appeal. |
How do Plantation Shutters block out light?

Plantation Shutters block out light through their adjustable louvres and panel structure. They feature a tilt rod that operates all the louvres in unison. Adjusting the tilt rod allows you to close the louvres fully, drastically reducing the light entering the room. For larger windows, the tilt rod can be split into separate sections giving you even more flexibility of light control & privacy.
As the louvres close, minimal gaps remain between the blades and the sides of the Shutter panels, helping to darken the space. The frame around the hinged shutters also assists in reducing the light gaps around the perimeter of the Shutters.
The frame that holds the Plantation Shutters is designed to sit snugly within the window reveal, reducing light leaks between the shutters and the window edges.
Can Plantation Shutters provide full blackout?

While Plantation Shutters are highly effective at dimming rooms, standard Shutters cannot achieve full blackout due to small gaps between the louvres and the framework. However, they still create a significantly darkened room!
For those who want complete darkness, our Nightfall system is the solution. This unique system combines Plantation Shutters with Honeycomb Blinds installed behind the Shutter panels, providing 100% light block. It’s the closest you can get to full blackout using Plantation Shutters, ideal for bedrooms and media rooms where total darkness is desired.
Alternatively, you can enhance the light-blocking capabilities of Plantation Shutters by adding Blackout Curtains over them or installing Roller Shutters on the exterior of your windows.
For the best light control within the Shutter panel itself, we recommend 89mm louvres as a minimum. This size strikes the perfect balance between style and functionality, allowing for excellent shading while maintaining a modern, sleek look.
